In Year 7 and 8 students study a mixed diet of Number, Algebra, Shape and Space and Data Handling units. Each unit is assessed with an end of unit test and skills get revisited and built upon throughout the year. Preceding each half-term, our Excellent Teacher, Jonny Heeley, delivers a master class on the next set of skills to be acquired and embeds them in a kinaesthetic manner.
The same programme is followed in Year 8 with the students consolidating skills acquired in Year 7 and then developing knowledge at a higher level in each unit.
Students are given a unique password at the beginning of the year for the MyMaths website www.mymaths.co.uk and this is used for homework and individualised learning. This website gives students instant feedback on each of the homework tasks that they complete and allows them to have endless attempts. This tests the development of understanding and shows improvement (each time a homework is completed, a different set of similar questions are generated). Any homework that has been set will be shown on the “My Tasks” menu displayed when a student logs in to their area. However, if students have experienced difficulty with a particular topic, they can do a search in “My Library” which will offer them additional tasks to help them improve their skills. For students wishing to advance their skills further they can do a level search and complete tasks in “My BoosterPacks”.
Students will also be supplied with their own login and password for the Sumdog website http://www.sumdog.com/ which allows them to play games as often as they wish to develop their mental arithmetic skills. Students will then be able to take part in regular competitions. We won the Secondary school section in the Kirklees competition last year - and we aim to continue our success!
