EYFS Explained

The Early Years begins when children reach the age of 3 and encompasses pupils in Nursery and Reception. The curriculum recognises children’s rapid development – physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.

It builds on what pupils already know and can do and is structured to ensure that all children feel included, secure and valued in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Well planned, purposeful activity and appropriate intervention will engage children in the learning process and help them to make progress to achieve their learning goals.

We recognise that parents and carers are the child’s first educators. They have a unique understanding and information about their child which foundation staff will be keen to share. Parental partnership is an essential element in any child's educational journey The Early Years curriculum is organised into 7 areas of learning

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematical development
  • Knowledge of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

The Curriculum

In educating your child we are concerned about the development of the whole child. We aim for your child to progress in an atmosphere that encourages confidence emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually. The curriculum includes activities that incorporate the classroom, outdoor spaces, school visits and visitors to the school. We believe that children should develop at a pace appropriate to their different needs and that individual needs and abilities should be met.

Where possible work is planned to ensure all opportunities for cross curricular links are used. Each class uses a mixture of class, group and individual teaching as appropriate.
