Numeracy

Mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us through developing a child’s ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships in numbers and shape, space and measures in their everyday lives.

In the Early Years children are taught Mathematics under the headings of Number and Shape, Space and Measures. There is a daily focus activity in mathematics plus plenty of planned opportunities to stretch and consolidate skills within the continuous provision using both the indoor and outdoor classroom.

When children move into Key Stage One they continue to have a daily mathematics lesson. The emphasis of these lessons can be algebra, number and number systems, calculations, data handling, and shape, space and measure. All these are then embedded when children are taught to use and apply the skills, often using problem solving questions. Opportunities are also made to link their learning in Mathematics into the broader curriculum so skills are being practised and consolidated in different contexts.

Here is our Primary Phase calculation policy for mathematics. This document sets out the progression for the development of fluent mental and written methods of calculation in each of the four operations.
