DSL's undertake level 3 child protection training and training in inter-agency working, which is kept up to date with refresher and new training on an annual basis. Staff are supported by The DSL and the DSL is supported by the Principal and the Safeguarding Governor.

All staff, including temporary staff and volunteers are provided with the Netherhall Learning Campus safeguarding guidelines and policy and are informed of the safeguarding arrangements on induction.

All staff share an objective to help keep children and young people safe by contributing to:

  • Providing a safe environment for children and young people to learn and develop in our school
  • Identifying children and young people who are suffering or likely to suffer significant harm and taking appropriate action with the aim of making sure they are kept safe both at home and in our school

All staff and governors at Netherhall Learning Campus undertake training on safeguarding children that enables them to fulfil their responsibilities in respect of child protection effectively. The training is refreshed on a regular basis to keep staff knowledge and skills up to date.

All staff follow the West Yorkshire Consortium Safeguarding Children Procedures which are consistent with "Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018" and "Keeping Children Safe in Education 2021".

Through their day-to-day contact with students, staff have a crucial role to play in keeping children safe.  Parents and carers should be aware, therefore, that where it appears to a member of staff that a child may be at risk, the school is required, as a part of local safeguarding procedures, to report their concerns to Social Services immediately.

"Do you need to talk to someone?"

katie-gerrard-FppsToUJBUI-unsplashIf you need to talk to someone about something that has happened to you, you should always speak to a trusted adult. Talking about a problem can often make you feel better, and you shouldn’t feel embarrassed, shy or ashamed. If you have been the victim of online grooming, or sexual abuse, there are people who can help.

It’s a good idea to talk to someone that you trust like a parent, carer, family member or teacher.

If you would like to talk to someone in confidence you can contact Childline (can you make this a hyperlink to the ChildLine page) – You can call them free on 0800 1111 and this number won’t appear on a telephone bill. The number is available 24 hours a day.

Kirklees Children Services

You can call 01484 456 848 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

West Yorkshire Police

You can also contact the police in a non-emergency 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, by calling 101. In an emergency where a crime is in progress, or there is a danger to life, always call 999.

The Prevent Agenda

From 1st July 2015 all schools have a due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and or violent extremism; this duty is known as the Prevent Duty.
The Prevent Duty, June 2015, DFE:

Click here to download advice for schools and childcare providers.

What is Prevent?

  • One element of the Home Offices Counter Terrorism Strategy
  • A team of staff work across Kirklees as part of the Prevent strategy and to support school’s.

The 4 Ps:

  • Pursue: to stop terrorist attacks
  • Protect: strengthen the UK’s protection against a terrorist attack
  • Prepare: where a terrorist attack cannot be stopped, mitigate its impact Prevent: the prevent agenda
  • “Provides a template for challenging extremist ideas and terrorist actions”

The Prevent Strategy

  • Aims to prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The three key themes (the 3 I’s)
  • Ideologies: respond the ideological challenge we face from those supporting terrorism
  • Individuals: provide support and advice to vulnerable individuals, preventing them from being drawn into terrorism
  • Institutions: work with Universities, colleges and schools to address the risk of radicalisation and violent extremism

The Role of Prevent and Education

All staff at Netherhall Learning Campus and the Governors have completed Prevent Training and are scheduled to complete WRAP (Working to Raise Awareness of Prevent) Training during this academic year. All staff are confident about the referral process in school if they suspect a student is being radicalised or drawn into extremist behaviour.

All students have completed assemblies and further tutor time activities based on the Prevent agenda that has outlined to them all what action to take if they have any concerns about anyone and who they should speak to at school if they suspect someone is at risk of radicalisation.

The Prevent agenda is part of the British Values and SMSC work that is taking place at Netherhall and students regularly discuss the main aspects of our Core Values (British Values) at Netherhall:

  • Tolerance
  • Mutual Respect
  • Democracy
  • Honesty
  • Positive Behaviour for Learning

New counter terrorism bill places a statutory duty on schools to help prevent young people being radicalised:

“Frontline staff should understand Prevent, be able to recognise vulnerabilities to radicalisation and know where to get to seek further help “
Home Office, December 2014

Other duties on schools include:

  • effective partnership working with other local agencies, eg. LSCB, police, health, etc.
  • information sharing
  • maintaining appropriate records
  • assessing local risk of extremism (including Far Right extremism)
  • demonstrating they are protecting children
  • developing clear protocols for visiting speakers
  • safeguarding policies that take account of LSCB policies and procedures
  • training staff to give them knowledge and confidence
  • ensuring there is robust ICT protocols that filter out extremist materials
  • school buildings must not be used to give a platform to extremists

Educate Against Hate

Hollie Guard App—Personal Safety App

To anyone with kids old enough to have mobile phones. Consider downloading the Hollie Guard App for them. If they are walking home late or alone, they can switch it on and you can track them. If someone approaches and they feel unsafe they can shake their phone. It sets off a high pitched alarm from the phone and also messages an alert to you ( or whoever's number is entered in as a guardian).
