Reading and Phonics

Reading

In Years 3 and 4, we use a variety of books to support children’s reading development and inspire their learning.

As well as Project X books, we use carefully chosen excerpts and shorter texts in whole class guided reading, often linked to our CLICK topics. Children also have a personal reading scheme book; they progress through these books and other Oxford Reading Tree books according to their reading age, and also how confidently they read and understand the story.

We encourage at least 15 minutes daily reading at home and each child has a reading record for adults at home to acknowledge their reading achievements.

In Years 5 and 6, we continue to encourage a love of reading and development of deeper comprehension skills through engaging with challenging and stimulating stories in whole class guided reading. Older children also use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme and can progress through to free readers.

To support children new to English, and bi-lingual children who are having difficulty accessing the English language curriculum, we use EALIP (which is English as an additional language intensive programme).

Children use our vibrant school library each week and have access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books.

Phonics

At Netherhall Junior School, we continue the work of our colleagues at the Infant School. We use Letters and Sounds with the children until they are working confidently at Phase 6.

We have a wide of phonetically decodable texts covering a huge variety of topics to ensure that learning to become a fluent reader is fun and enjoyable for all our children.
