What will I learn from this subject?

Citizenship Studies is about how people take an active part in democratic politics and work together for a better society, locally, nationally and globally. Students are encouraged to express opinion and consider views of others to form sustained and reasoned arguments.

GCSE Citizenship involves the study of 5 main themes:

1.    Living together in the UK
2.    Democracy at work in the UK
3.    Law and Justice
4.    Power and influence
5.    Taking citizenship action

Anything else I need to know?

Citizenship gives pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels.

It helps them to become more informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights, promoting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development making them more self confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom.

Citizenship helps students explore complex and often very conflicting values and attitudes. They learn to manage new or difficult situations positively and form effective relationships with a wide range of people.

A student, Holly E, who studied GCSE citizenship at NLC in 2014 said, "It is very interesting learning about local, national and international matters. It was fantastic to campaign on behalf of Kirkwood Hospice to raise both awareness and funds for the Hospice. Being able to make a difference in our community was immensely satisfying'.

What can I do after?

It may be useful for a range of careers, including:
