What will I learn from this subject?

Film is widely acknowledged as the major art form of the 29th century and today film continues to be an important part of most people's cultural experience.

This course is designed to build upon your own experience of film - as a viewer - and to develop a critical eye for film style and film production.


What can I do after? 

The Creative Media - Film Studies course provides a suitable foundation for a Level 3 course in any creative subject, especially Creative & Media Production. This course will also be perfect for any student who wants to develop their awareness of how Film and TV are produced alongside the theory behind each production.

How is it assessed? 

50% coursework

Assignment 1: Exploring a film of the student's choice

  • Task 1: A film exploration of the student's choice. Research task.
  • Task 2: A scene analysis from that chosen film.
    Essay task.

Assignment 2: Production

Students create a pitch for an imaginary film and then use that pitch to form the basis of their preproduction (screenplay, storyboard, film magazine, marketing campaign). Once completed, students create a final production (short film, website, magazine feature, poster campaign, press pack) along with an evaluative analysis.

50% Examination (2 papers)

  • Paper 1: Exploring Film (1 hour 30 minutes, 30%)
  • Paper 2: Exploring Film outside Hollywood (1 hour, 20%)

You will need to have:

  • have a good attendance and punctuality record.

  • be prepared to hand in all coursework and assignments on time.
